SERTÃO

​I was born in southeastern Brazil and I am the daughter of a northeastern couple who migrated to São Paulo in search of a better life, but with Sertão in their hearts. I grew up surrounded by stories, memories, and music my father cherished. I am deeply connected to my origin through the lives of my ancestors. This renders a melancholic look to my photos of Sertão, almost as if missing it. I am interested in the life of Sertão. I am interested in the connection between human beings and nature. Sometimes such a dry nature, that people must be incredibly strong and creative to deal with the animals and the soil. I am also fascinated by Sertão culture, where the relation with God is very strong, intense, full of music, dance, singing and rituals. I watch time, sovereign while shedding its moving layers, but unable to eliminate old habits such as saving water in jars and clay jugs. The clay which is the earth itself, providing life. The cowboy in leather clothes, protected by the skin of the animals he protects as well, represents the cycle of life. United for survival. Therefore, such a unique Sertão’s way of life activates my desire to capture so much beauty and richness that represent one of Brazil's many features.
